A village and its largest manufacturer approached IFM concurrently for assistance on alleviating problems stemming from the poor performance of the facilities wastewater pretreatment plant.
The municipality was facing possible Findings and Orders as a result of organic overloading from wastewater recieved from the facility, a large industrial bakery.
Simultaneously, the bakery was also facing regulatory actions during this time due to poor treatment from the plant and problems that it causing at the village's wastewater plant.
After reviewing several items, IFM felt that many of the problems encountered by both the municipality and the industry could be potentially solved through improved technical supervision of the bakeryâ€™s pretreatment plant.
Upon review of the bakery's pretreatment facility, it was determined that the plant was not operated in a biological friendly manner. It was determined that the plantâ€™s original design could potentially treat the bakery well below limits set forth by the Village and OEPA
With the technical know how and proven bioaugmentation products that IFM brought to this situation, the plant was returned to conventional activated sludge operation.
Through the addition of pseudomonas and bacillus strains of bacteria, IFM was able to successfully prove that the plant could double its average organic loading capacity with higher effluent quality than ever achieved previously. The use of bioaugmentation also significantly reduced the pretreatment plant's solids production resulting in a solids reduction of approximately 25%.
The results of this application, led by IFM's technical staff, proved beneficial to the bakery and the village POTW.
For the bakery, surcharges were eliminated, liquid waste hauling was reduced and operational costs were streamlined. The facility not only meets village and OEPA limits, but often discharges effluent with BODs< 50mg/l, TSS <100 mg/l and oil and grease <10 mg/l.
The village's wastewater plant has been positively impacted through flow equalization and reduced loadings, which have led to less sludge production and improved operations. This in turn has led to higher quality effluent and eliminated the need for plant expansion at this time.
